Region

Uzda District is located in the central part of Minsk Region of the Republic of Belarus and borders on the Kopyl, Dzerzhinsk, Stolbtsy, Slutsk, Pukhovichy and Minsk districts.

The administrative center is the town of Uzda located 77km away from Minsk, the capital of the Republic of Belarus. The area of Uzda District is 1,180 sq. km. Geographically, the district is divided into the town of Uzda and nine rural councils. There are 203 villages in the district.

Population of Uzda District is 23,100, of them 13,300 is rural population, and 9,800 live in urban areas. A total of 10,700 are involved in the local economy.

Uzda District is proud of its war heroes and labor achievements. Three thousand natives of our land were awarded orders and medals for courage and heroism during the Great Patriotic War. Three locals were awarded the title “The Hero of the soviet Union”. These are Vladimir Karachun, Ivan Kozich, and Nikolai Novitsky.

During the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945, 6,000 natives of Uzda District were killed, 19 villages were completely destroyed.

We have a lot of historic places associated with the life and work of outstanding people of different times. A Belarusian scientist, inventor, anatomist, Professor of Electrophotography and Magnetism Yakov Narkevich-Iodko set up a meteorological station in his estate Nadneman, made his discoveries in physics, medicine, agriculture here in the 19th century.

Uzda District has contributed to the spread of book printing in Belarus. In 1572 printer Symon Budny lived here and wrote an introduction to the Bible, and the brothers Kavechinskis a dedication to it. Faddei Bulgarin, the founder of the Russian prose and a publicist, was born in the estate Pyrashevo on the turn of the 17th century.

The district gave birth to a galaxy of prominent Belarusian linguists and journalists, great artists, scientists, figures of culture and warfare, and public figures. Among them were 22 scholars and 33 candidates of sciences.

Twenty-three poets and writers were raised in Uzda District for which the land has been called a “poet’s corner”. Among them were Kondrat Krapiva, Pavlyuk Trus, Petro Glebko, Ales Yakimovich, Ilya Gursky, Ales Palchevsky, Anton Belevich and many others.

Uzda District is proud of its Heroes of Socialist Labor: Kondrat Krapiva (Atrakhovich), Konstantin Shavel, Ivan Sakolchik; two winners of state awards – Anatoly Ostapchik and Ivan Solovei; thirty-two honored workers of the Republic of Belarus

Uzda District is home to more than 160 historical monuments, 20 archaeological sites, 6 monuments of local importance, 3 estates that are of historical and cultural value for the Republic of Belarus.
